topography
is the documenting of a space
in minute detail, this selection represents images from a
locally owned and run shop where a friend and i would
always get coffee and fruit and discuss art and life and
our hearts and politics, and i was intrigued by the
personalization and level of creativity in the
store. so i asked if i could do a project and the owner
said yes.
the idea in this sort of reframing
is to collect striking excerpts
when distilled from day-to-day.
the ambient sounds are also formed into a collage, with
fragmented randomized lines of writing, a poetic
cataloging of event and offering.
the images and the sound collage has not been
presented together.
i like the images to rest. to be
non-dynamic. to be still.
i don't want them moving in and out
of each other or fading or being
timed to something. i like to
simply offer them.
socio-poetic topography is a
practice of heightened awareness
and particularity as well as
pattern.
it is a process of being and
allowing things to be.
it is a process of knowing these
things as they occur.
it is a collection of information and a synthesis of
experience.
it is an experiment in sociological documentation.
i had been in that store so many times. but they let me go
everywhere and stand on things and get down on the
floor and the customers loved it...'she's doing an art
project' and they would say ohhhh! with hushed tones. i
think they probably looked at things in that store
differently after that.
